Legit Theology 31/10/23: The Theurgical Vitality of Putting Tefilin
post by gur dimei

During the war I began putting tefilin on a daily basis. I went to a chabad shop in netanya from which I ordered a 3X3 tefilin with parshiot in an Arizal script. In fact, during yom kippur I have delved deeper into the mysteries of Rabbi Nathan’s Sefer haBria (the Book of Creation), and the book I’m working on since august (elucidations on shabbatean theology) already has 79 pages (some of the titles of sections in the book, as a teaser: polydemiurgism; liturgy as syntheotic child-raising; a theology of increasing; bottom-up cosmogenesis; etc.). One of the subjects that Rabbi Nathan emphasizes is Mitzvat Tefilin (“the commandment of phylacteries”).
According to Rabbi Nathan, Tefilin is Oz (“courage” or “strength”), or in aramaic – cheila (חילא). The word cheila appears in the holy Zohar many times, for instance – in the first daf of parashat bo, in which the Zohar says:

When Israel are doing bad deeds (ovadin d’la kasheran) they weaken the Holy-One-Blessed-be-He. And when they do good things (ovadin d’chasheran), they gift the Holy-One-Blessed-be-He with stringency (tukpa) and strength (cheila). And for this it was written: “Let us strengthen God” (Psalms 68:35).

Rabbi Nathan elucidates, that using these stringencies and strengths – with which He is gifted by the souls-of-Israel – God enforms Himself. Rabbi Ya’akov Koppel ZT”L elucidates, as for the mystery of Psalms-68:35, that the souls raise mayin nukvin (uterine blood) toward the divine fetus. Hence – the souls are the mother of God. When we put tefilin, in Shema prayer, we devote our soul to the enveloping and enfolding of the divine fetus. Our responsibility is immense.
My advice to the Jewish readers of this blog is: put tefilin, and devote your soul to the strengthening and enwombing of God. This feels great. Putting tefilin is very healthy for your soul, because you can feel yourself growing together with Him. May we all grow together with Him. Amen.
